Where do we want D-Will: Brooklyn or Dallas?

Now that man-child DeAndre Jordan has decided to take his binky back to Los Angeles, the biggest story in the NBA right now involves Deron Williams and two teams whose 2016 1st round picks belong to your Boston Celtics. Via ESPN:

Former All-Star point guard Deron Williams is in talks with the Brooklyn Nets about securing his potential release this offseason to clear the way for Williams to sign with his hometown Dallas Mavericks, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Nets, whose well-chronicled hope is moving out both Williams and fellow former cornerstone Joe Johnson before the start of next season, have opened buyout talks with Williams on the remaining two years and $43.3 million of his contract. ‎

Sources say the Mavericks, by contrast, are very motivated to sign Williams after being spurned in free agency by DeAndre Jordan, provided Williams can extricate himself from the Nets and get to the open market.

The Mavericks, sources said, are not pursuing a trade for Williams because of salary-cap space such a move would eat up.

Since NBA buyouts are typically 70% of the contract value (according to some Tweet I read but can’t recall the source), the Nets might be paying Deron Williams $30 million to go away. The move would save them millions on their tax bill but slide them towards the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Such a scenario could land the Celtics a top 7 pick. Even higher if Brooklyn dumps Joe Johnson. Giddy up.

Because the Mavericks 1st round pick is top 7 protected, we want Dallas to be bad, but not too bad. The acquisition of Deron Williams would likely keep them out of the lottery, but not good enough to be anything more than the 8th seed in the West. The Celtics could be looking at a pick in the 10-14 range. Giddy up, again.

Bottom line: Get on your knees every night and pray for the Nets to buyout Williams.

In other news, Vlade Divac says the relationship between George Karl and DeMarcus Cousins is not pretty. I still believe the Kings dump Karl before trading Cousins, but crazier things have happened in Sac-town.

Great time to be a celtic fan. If we have a 10-14 and a 5-8, our options are endless. Trade up, trade down on one of them, trade them both for established talent (DMC?). Boy Danny, love it. Good thing you can never have too many draft picks.

  I cringe when you’ll talk like trades are so easy to make. It takes a willing trade partner to make a deal and it’s never even close to easy. It’s usually much closer to not gonna happen. Trades are possibilities at best, but never options.

      Possibility: Maybe the option is there, maybe not.
      Ordinarily, a trade is not there unless there’s an enormous amount of time and enery put in to it. And even after all that, they do not happen.
      It wasn’t my intent to pick on you. It’s all the talk on this blog, including by the authors, about all the talk of trades that could or will go down. Example: “Kevin Love is coming to Boston”. Almost all of the time , it’s bunch of bull. Danny and the draft pick trades, More bull.

Actually I think it works out perfectly because Dallas won’t make the playoffs even with Williams on board, but they won’t be awful enough to tank. Like CBS and the Celtics, the Mavs have an excellent coach in Rick Carlisle who is too good to tank so you know Dallas is going to play hard this season, but that doesn’t means things will be easy for them. At all. Williams isn’t even half the player he was in Utah, and Dallas has Zaza Pachulia at the 5. Combine that with Dirk’s age + Matthews/Parsons coming off serious injuries and all you can say is yikes. The west has 4 juggernauts in San Antonio, Golden State, Oklahoma City (i hope), and the Clippers. Houston and Memphis are right behind them. Then you’ve got teams like New Orleans, Phoenix, Utah, and maybe Minnesota (depending on their vets health and the development of the young ones) who are all young and improving who will be vying for a spot this year. Need I mention Sacramento, even if they are dysfunctional, have more all-around talent on their team than Dallas does? The only teams that will be worse than Dallas next year will be Denver, Portland, and the Lakers. With the weak east, I think that will put Dallas in the 8-11 range, which is exactly where the Celtics want them.

Then there’s Brooklyn. Considering they are trying to get rid of Johnson to save money (I think they and Cleveland will re-visit those trade talks) and they are discussing waiving Williams to save money, their season could potentially be a disaster. Even though they brought back Lopez, his health is still a question mark and with Williams and Johnson gone, who are they going to turn to for productivity if Lopez gets hurt? Jarrett Jack? Thaddeus Young? Steve Blake? Those guys are role players. Or how bout the low-risk/possible medium reward draft failures like Shane Larkin and Thomas Robinson? Gotta say, this sounds to me like this is working out better and better for the Celtics. And even if Williams and Johnson stay, I don’t see the Nets making the playoffs. Not just because those guys are deteriorating but because the east should theoretically get better pending any injuries. Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, Milwaukee, Miami, Boston, Toronto (if they don’t blow it up), Washington, Detroit, Charlotte, and quite possibly Orlando could be better than Brooklyn next year depending on their youth movement. The only teams that I think Brooklyn could beat out is Philly, Indiana (They have no proven bigs), and New York, but if Lopez gets hurt, then there goes the season.

There’s a lot of bias in here, but it’s not impossible that this happens.

  I agree with everything you said except the comment about the pacers, they should easily be way better than the nets. They signed Jordan Hill who isnt good but sure makes them way better than the nets.

    Wow I didn’t even see that. Hill’s a nice player for them. I take that back. If there’s any team who I might be worse than Nets that I would be, it could be Charlotte, but they are deeper than Brooklyn.

NICE. ESPN are reporting Williams will join Dallas after clearing waivers. He’ll still make around USD10 million a year combined from Dallas and his Nets buyout, won’t he?

Anyway, according to Divac, it isn’t pretty between Boogie and Karl right now.

SO: Brooklyn 2016 + Dallas 2016 + David Lee = Boogie?

Not saying this happens this summer (it can’t because Celts haven’t even completed the Lee/Wallace swap yet) — but if it’s January and BKN is bad, Dallas is just so-so and Boogie has several more run-ins with Karl, SAC has to take this deal, right?

I guess it boils down to: would you rather the Celtics have a CHANCE at Ben Simmons (i.e. the BKN pick) and whoever is available between 8-14 (i.e. the DAL pick) OR the certainty of young All-Star Boogie (if SAC does the trade)?

  I’m with red’s army when I say the Kings will dump Karl before they dump Cousins. Especially since DMC’s contract will be a huge bargain next year. Sactown has no incentive to give up Cousins barring a trade request, and in fact, if you look at his twitter, you can see Cousins is really excited for this upcoming season.

    Sure. That’s if the Kings have a choice. We’ve all seen disgruntled stars force their way elsewhere over the years.
    
    If the Kings are off to a strong start and are the 5th or 6th seed in the West, everything will be better (winning cures everything) and Cousins goes nowhere or, barring that, they kick Karl to the curb.
    
    Regardless, Ainge has more intriguing assets now — certainly better-looking than they were a week ago.

      Absolutely agreed. Except for the 5th or 6th seed. The top 6 teams in the west are San Antonio, Golden State, OKC, Clippers, Houston, and Memphis. Barring any injuries, they will get the 6 seeds because they are all contenders. The Kings could get 7 or 8 though.
