Your Morning Dump… Where an NBA scout uses Sullinger to make a point about laziness

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Over at Grantland, Ryen Russilo’s “NBA Draft Confidential” posts are always interesting reads. Thursday, he offered scouts’ takes on three of the top draft prospects: Karl-Anthony Towns, Jahlil Okafor and D’Angelo Russell.

Within all the neat basketball talk, one scout compared Okafor to Boston Celtics big man Jared Sullinger. And not in a flattering manner.

“Now I’ve heard, if you were to ask the Duke people, and they were to be honest with you, there’s not a great love for the game (for Okafor),” said the anonymous scout. “Not like you’d think. Not a great passion.

“He’ll be there, and do the right things. But it’s like Jared Sullinger: I want to play, but I don’t want to lose weight. I don’t want to really get in shape. I want to do enough, but I’m not going to do extra. And that is concerning.”

MassLive – While assessing Jahlil Okafor, NBA scout takes shot at Boston Celtics big man Jared Sullinger

If you recall back to this time last year, Ryen Rusillo had this same type of series of posts about the top players of the 2014 NBA Draft.  Imagine hanging out at a bar with three grizzled NBA scouts and discussing the top prospects with a no holds barred approach.  That’s what these posts are like.  They are entertaining, funny, informative and give you a glimpse into the thought process of scouts.  It’s all a good time, until one of the players on your favorite team is used as an example of laziness.

Close to the end of the piece on Grantland, they discuss Duke big man Jahlil Okafor, and as you can see from the quote above, it’s not exactly the greatest comparison you’d want to see.  But the good news for C’s fans is that this is not new news.  We’ve all known this for a while and even Sullinger’s own GM, Danny Ainge, had blasted him publicly.  Look, it’s no secret that Sullinger needs to get in shape, but not just to prove a point.

If, like the scout aptly describes, he wants to have a serious and long career, he needs to change his lifestyle completely.  If it’s here in Boston or used as a trade chip for a better piece, he has no choice really.  It’s already proven that he wasn’t good enough to headline a package for Kevin Love, so he’s definitely not going to entice the Sacramento Kings for DeMarcus Cousins. Sully has a lot to lose, so let’s hope for his sake he starts with the weight.

On Page 2, KG was the alpha male of the 2008 team

FoxSportsLive – Jay & Dean Podcast with Brian Scalabrine

This is a small clip from the entire podcast, but I’m sure the entire thing is great since Scal is involved.  Scal tells the story of how Big Baby beat everybody on the 2008 team in an arm wrestling match… except for Kevin Garnett.  Ticket got so fired up one day to beat him, and beat him he did after taking himself into that zone that only KG knows exists.  At around the 2:40 mark, Scal describes KG’s reaction, and we can learn three things from it:

  • KG yelled: “I’M THE ALPHA MALE IN THIS MOTHA FUCKA!!!”
  • KG declared: “I’M THE SILVER BACKED GORILLA!!!”
  • All of us should: “NEVER FORGET IT!!!”

We haven’t, Ticket… and we never will.

At some point, Perk said that HE was the silver back (on court with OKC). Now we know where he got it.

Scal has brought us full circle. If you don’t love Scal, then you don’t know Scal.

Is the draft anytime soon? :(

    • eddysamson

      Yes! 6 days.

Poor Sully. If he doesn’t get his head out of his ass he’s going to have a hard time getting a good contract. Hope Danny doesn’t fall for it no matter how good of shape he comes in.

    • RedsLoveChild

Sully has already “peaked”….his NBA career will end by age 27, 28.

      • Fitzy

doubtful that he will be out of the NBA by 28.

        • RedsLoveChild

Hard to say, that`s still 5 years away.

Every year is the same “boring drama” with Sully…..missing games, dealing with injuries, weight issues, promising to get in shape, etc.

          • Fitzy

he’s 23 right now and will be 24 by the time next season ends. He’ll sign a min 2 year deal but he’ll seek out a 4X7 would be my guess. That would take him to 28 and then someone will at least take vet min bets or MLE (Evan Turner) on him after that.

          • RedsLoveChild

It all comes down to his weight & conditioning.

3 years into his career, and he`s still overweight and lacks stamina. He vowed to change a few months ago, but talk is cheap.
Ainge is running out of patience. If JS fails to show up at the next camp in shape, Boston will lose interest in him, and the rest of the NBA will see it Ainge`s way.

If JS can`t get in shape in his early 20`s, something is very wrong.
Who needs him? Each year brings a new batch of 6`9″ guys who are ripped & athletic.

          • Fitzy

            glen davis.

          • RedsLoveChild

Are you seeing lots of 6`9″ players joining the NBA each year with physiques like Baby, who is nothing but a reserve?

            I don`t

          • Fitzy

the original argument is longevity in the NBA. Not how tall you are. Glen Davis wasn’t in shape in his early 20s and in fact seems to have embraced the big body physique, he still carved a niche, just like Sullinger will.

          • RedsLoveChild

Big Baby averaged 4 PPG, 2 RPG, 12 MPG with the Clippers this year.
That`s not exactly the kind of “niche” that`s gonna cause Ainge to want to throw money at Sully.

          • Fitzy

We’re not talking about throwing money at sully. you said he’d be out of the NBA by 29 and that is very implausible. If Big Baby Davis can stay in the NBA @ 29 averaging that, then Jared Sullinger who is a better basketball player can as well.
