Recap: Celtics take the Warriors to the wire

When Jae Crowder’s 3-pointer rimmed out with about 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, something rare happened. I jumped up off my couch and stood up during a Celtics game (an impressive feat considering the amount of wine and beer I had consumed). I think it’s been about 2 years since that’s happened.

Yes, the Celtics lost to the Warriors, 106-101, and blew a 26-point first half lead in the process. But these guys scraped and fought and played their heart out against one of the league’s best team.

The play of the game belongs to Andre Iguodala who – after losing the dribble – drove to the hoop for a lay-in that put GS up 102-99 with 26 seconds left.

Green

The 1st half was glorious. The Celtics put up 38 points int he 1st quarter and led 65-49 at the break. They had 1 turnover. One.

Isaiah Thomas (20 points, 8-21 FG) had a 6 minute stretch where he scored 13 points on 5-7 FG.

How about Brandon Bass’ 3rd quarter? 10 points, 6 rebounds in 12 minutes.

Credit to Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley for their defense on Klay Thompson (9-23 FG, 2-10 3 FG).

Gross

Isaiah Thomas was 2-10 in the 2nd half.

The Celtics were outscored 31-15 in the 4th quarter.

Steph Curry had 37 points on 14-22 FG. There was no defending him tonight.

Greenlights

Since KWAPT as at the Garden, I don’t have any Vines. But he did forward this beauty – Bass dunks in Bogut’s grill

And speaking of beauty… here’s a photo of Patrice Bergeron’s wife

Too much hero ball at the end cost the C’s the game, but I have to give them major props for making the Warriors sweat a bit. Did NOT expect the C’s to even be up by 20+ points against the Warriors.

Oh and let’s face it… we won’t see Isaiah go 2-10 in the 2nd half too often. And holy crap is Steph Curry like a major cheat code. This kid can make any shot anywhere… I held my breath every time he chucked a shot. The thing about the Warriors is that at several stretches in the game, they honestly don’t impress me. All they do is have the Splash Brothers chuck shots and due to their incredible talent, they seem to make them with ease. They kinda remind me of the old Orlando Magic where they live and die by the three, except they got two of the most amazing shooters in the NBA.

Big props to the C’s for fighting!

Bogut had a lot of bad luck tonight. David Lee and Bogut will win several playoff games for them. I wouldn’t underestimate them.

  • KWAPT

That was the first game in a longggg time where the Garden felt like the “Jungle”. This group of guys have so much heart and are such fighters! The energy they bring incites the crowd & they feed on it. Sure, it sucked to choke this one away. But we just came within a smidgen of beating the NBA’s best team w/out Sully. Def disappointed, but not in our guys-just at the mistakes they made down the stretch.

Monster dunk by Bass that was dunk of the year candidate for us

My bad. Was referencing offensive rebounds. Fixed.

Major no call right before that Iguodala layup, AB forces an 8 second violation on Steph. Sigh. I hate when the refs miss a call at such a crucial point. Oh well, no turning back now. Were fighting for that 8 seed

The team went from playing fast and unselfish to slow and selfish. That’s how you blow leads. Crowder was brutal in this game. Those slams by Bass were thunderous …

  • Rod Shaftwell

Last time we played them it was just like this-down to the wire. Only this time the officials didn’t help them nearly as much. They missed several key calls that helped the Warriors but for the most part, they were ok.

Sucks to lose this winnable game against the #1 team but these are the types of losses you learn from.
