Congratulations to Grande & Max on 1,000 games

The Boston Celtics are all about history.  The team is steeped in decades of it, and that extends to the broadcast teams.  Mike Gorman and Tommy Heinsohn have been working together for more than 30 years now... which is longer than some of you have been alive (oh, shoot me).

Now, it's time to honor, and thank, Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell... who will be calling their 1,000th radio game for the Celtics tonight.

“The entire Boston Celtics organization would like to congratulate Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell on their 1,000th broadcast together,” Boston Celtics President Rich Gotham said in a statement released by the team.  “Grande and Max have become the voices of the Celtics on the radio for a whole generation of fans.  They have exhibited great chemistry and professionalism throughout their partnership and we look forward to many more seasons of high quality play-by-play and analysis from them.”

In addition to being one of the best play-by-play guys out there, Grande is really good on Twitter.  If you're a Celtics fan on Twitter and you haven't followed him, I suggest you do. 

I'd like to personally thank Grande and Max for their work on Celtics games.  There have been countless times where I've been stuck in traffic on 128 and had to tune in to the radio broadcast.  And not once did I feel like I missed anything.  In fact, without a game to watch, you're hanging on the announcer's every word and every change in inflection to tell you the story.  It can get a little more exciting, because you have to wait for the reaction so you can react.  Listening to a game on the radio is a much different experience.  These guys do it as well as anyone. 

Congratulations on 1,000 games... and here's to a 1,000 more (and hopefully a few more championships mixed in). 

Dope new Forest Lab tees

One of my favorite websites, Pick Your Shoes.com, has once again partnered with the Forest Lab for some outstandingtees. Seeing that Larry Legend's birthday is this week, this new tee simply entitled "Bird" is perfect. It features Larry with a great big cigar in his mouth, Red style, and donning a crown. It comes in white and green.

But my favorite of the two is the "Legacy Boston" tee. This shirt is a "who's who" of Celtic greats, old & new. Ainge, Cousy, Russell, KG, The Truth and many, many more are emblazoned across the front. It also comes in green and white and you can zoom in on the player's faces at the site.

The shirts are $30 each, but well worth it. They are a nice break from the hundreds of other common Celtics shirts you find on the web.

Max: "No fire in the belly..."

"There's no fire in the belly," he told Felger. "When this team has played well, you heard Kevin Garnett barking and screaming at people. When this team has played well, [Rajon] Rondo has had the ability . . . to step up and get emotional . . . And Doc Rivers right now, coaching . . . I'm not sure exactly where this team is going and what they're listening to. It just seems like, everybody's going in another direction right now."

He said he doesn't think the players have tuned out Rivers -- "I think Doc still has their ear. But I think collectively right now, as a unit, they've tuned out each other. And that is a bigger problem." -- but that their attitude has to change.

"I still think they can get healthy, but I think they have to get healthy in a mental respect," he said. "They still have a very talented basketball team.

"Now, in 1977 when I got to the Celtics, we had a very talented basketball team. Seven guys who had made the All-Star team. And then, all of a sudden, we became a paper champion. This right now is what the Celtics are becoming: A paper champion. Until they get out with the attitude and the aggressive nature and the posture, get out there and kick some booty, they're not going to win anything . . .

"[Right] now, the way they're going, I could go out there, if I was with New Jersey [last Saturday], I could have [gotten] 15 points and 10 rebounds."

Max: Fans need a code of ethics

Cedric Maxwell was on WBZ's Sports Final last night, and among the things he talked about was the need for a "Fans Code of Ethics", saying...

"Big Baby was wrong, make sure you say that... Big Baby was wrong with what he said.  But at the same time our fans need to have a code of ethics."

His main point was if you wouldn't say it to someone's face... then you shouldn't be able to say it from the crowd. 

Then again, Max might be biased. He did (as he points out in that interview) do this:

I do think some fans go overboard... but ultimately... it's the player's responsibility to tune that stuff out.

Max is Big on 'Sheed, Celtics Chances

Via the Worcester Telegram & Gazette:

“I like them when they’re healthy,” Maxwell said of the Celtics’ chances to raise banner No. 18. “Last year, they played courageous ball. You had only six guys playing in 14 games, and they just ran out of gas.”

On Rasheed Wallace:

“I love him,” Maxwell said. “He can play multiple roles. He’ll elongate the floor. He brings outside shooting. He can give (Kevin Garnett) rest. He’ll be like P.J. Brown was for them two years ago, but he brings more scoring (a 15-point career average). He also has great enthusiasm, which can be contagious.”

On Glen Davis:

“The money is starting to dry up,” Maxwell said of Davis, who averaged 15.8 points in 14 postseason games last year. “This economy is killing him. The salary cap has shrank, but I think they would like to keep him.”

On Marquis Daniels:

“Well, I would hope they would get him,” Maxwell said. “He’s not a bad shooter, not a bad defender. They can use him.”

On referee Violet Palmer:

"Go back to the kitchen...go in there and make me some bacon and eggs, would you?"

Oops. That last quote wasn't from this most recent interview. I still find it hilarious.

Cruel Joke on Max

Last week on WEEI, Cedric Maxwell shared with the masses a hilarious story from his childhood. Max was 8-years-old when he was sent to the hospital to have his tonsils removed. Or so he thought. Turns out, Max's mom pulled the old bait-and-switch on young Cedric. He was really having a circumcision.

"When I'm coming out of surgery, I'm going...did the guy miss? Was he a little low? What the hell happened?"

Rondo Upset With Maxwell?

A bizarre incident between Rajon Rondo and Celtics radio broadcaster Cedric Maxwell. Rondo had some harsh words for Maxwell as he headed into the showers, and the point guard did not appear to be joking. Definitely some tension in the room.

Maybe Max told Rondo to get in the kitchen and make him some bacon and eggs. Quack, quack, quack!!!
